An exhibition on AI

Affiche de l'exposition

This temporary exhibition is the public showcase of the TIARe project (All Artificial Intelligence in Rennes), winner of the "Skills and Future Professions" call for expressions of interest under the France 2030 investment plan and funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR).

Led by the University of Rennes, TIARe federates five other higher education institutions ENSAI (National School of Statistics and Data Analysis), ENS RennesINSA RennesInstitut Agro Rennes-Angers, and University of Rennes 2 thereby creating a rare multidisciplinary dynamic that brings together hard sciences, humanities and social sciences, statistics, and engineering. The project also builds on the scientific excellence of Rennes-based laboratories, including IRISA (Research Institute in Computer Science and Random Systems) and the Inria Centre at the University of Rennes, two internationally renowned research hubs that feed into the training content and contribute to the design of the mediation tools presented in the exhibition.

It is within this framework that the exhibition What is AI? was born, the fruit of an unprecedented collaboration between the University of Rennes and the Musée des Transmissions – Espace Ferrié in Cesson-Sévigné. The ambition is not to offer a technical lecture, but to give all audiences families, school groups, students, professionals in retraining the keys to understanding what lies behind the term “artificial intelligence.” To achieve this, the visitor journey has been designed as a sensitive and scientific investigation, where one observes, manipulates, and questions. The technical mechanisms are made visible without jargon, and the long history of AI, from the first calculating machines to deep neural networks, is put into perspective to dispel fantasies.

The exhibition What is AI? is the fruit of a collaboration between the University of Rennes and the Musée des Transmissions in Cesson-Sévigné. Its goal is to demystify artificial intelligence by revealing its technical workings, its historical roots, and its scientific and social dimensions. The historical, scientific, and social dimensions are explored to shed light on this field, while inviting us to question our own uses through six thematic hubs: AI for perceiving; AI for predicting; AI for generating; AI for playing; AI for defending; and a touring hub: AI and society.

Where is the exhibition taking place?

Musée des Transmissions

The Musée des Transmissions is a unique space devoted to the history and development of information and communication technologies, both civilian and military. Drawing on several collections and memorial sites, it brings together equipment, documents and expertise illustrating the essential role of communications and signals.

Designed as a modern educational facility accessible to all, it features a permanent exhibition across two floors, enhanced by models and interactive displays, as well as temporary exhibitions such as "Qu'est ce qu'IA?". In this way, it helps to pass on the traditions and memory of this speciality.
